Kathmandu: Amid opposition`s demand for his resignation, Nepal`s Premier Baburam Bhattarai today said he was ready to quit if that helped in resolving the political crisis and formation of "another legitimate" government through national consensus.
In a televised address to the nation to mark the completion of one year in office of the Maoists-led coalition government, he said the government is ready to step down once a package deal is reached with political parties on a forward-looking resolution of the current political crisis.
The Prime Minister claimed that significant progress was made in the government`s twin goals of concluding the peace process and drafting a new Constitution, as well as other key issues like economic progress and good governance.
The country`s 601-member Constituent Assembly was dissolve on May 27 without promulgating the Constitution.
Bhattarai also claimed that forging an alliance between the Maoists and the Joint Madhesi Front was a historic necessity for attaining progressive agenda, such as promulgating the Constitution by incorporating federalism and inclusiveness.
Cautioning people against a conspiracy being hatched by regressive forces against democracy and federalism, the Premier stressed that no force can snatch from them important achievements like republic system, federalism, secularism, inclusiveness and proportionate representation.
However, he said he was ready to quit power if that helped in resolving the current political crisis and formation of another legitimate government through national consensus.
