Dhaka: At least 11 people, including nine
children, drowned and six others were missing after an
overloaded motorboat capsized in northeastern Bangladesh,
police said on Thursday.

"The fire service divers and local people retrieved
bodies of 11 nine of them are minor children and two are
women along with the capsized boat," officer-in-charge of
the local police station in Kishorganj, Subrata Kumar Saha,
said.

He said two children, two women and two elderly men
were still missing "but we fear they are dead by now", nearly
a day after the boat carrying 100 people went down in the
Dhaleshwari river.

"Most of the passengers, however, managed to swim ashore
after the accident," Saha said.

Quoting survivors and villagers who joined the
salvage campaign, local media said nearly a dozen more people
remained untraced, despite the official claim of six.

Both the police and local sources said overloading
of passengers apparently caused the accident.
