Dhaka: At least 11 people were missing after a river ferry collided with a barge and capsized near the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, police said on Monday.
The ferry was overloaded with about 80 passengers when it hit a sand barge in the Shitalkkhaya river late on Sunday and sank on the southern outskirts of Dhaka, police inspector Fazlul Haq said.
"The boat was mainly carrying garment workers returning to their homes after work. Most of the workers swam to shore or were rescued alive by other boats. But at least 11 people are still missing," Haq said.
Strong currents in the river were hampering the rescue operation, he said.
Boat accidents due to lax safety standards and overloading are common in Bangladesh, which is criss-crossed by 230 rivers.
