Dhaka: The Indian envoy here on Sunday dismissed speculations in the Bangladeshi media that two of the absconding convicted killers of the country's founding leader Sheikh Mujib were held in Indian jails.
Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty, the outgoing Indian High Commissioner, termed the report as speculation.
"I think there is no confirmation about that. I think
that is simply speculated report," Chakravarty told the Daily
Star newspaper ahead of his departure today on completion of
his three-year tenure in Dhaka.
Chakravarty said there was no doubt that if the
convicted killers were hiding in India they would not feel
comfortable because "India will certainly not entertain their
stay".
"Let me say in principle if such people are found in
India, there should be no second thoughts, and we will
certainly help in handing them over," he underlined. He said
"they are in other countries".
Chakravarty’s comments came as several Bangladeshi
newspapers in recent days reported that two of the six
absconding convicted ex-army personnel – sacked captain MA
Mazed and Risaldar (soldier) Moslemuddin were in Indian jails.
Bangladesh has intensified its diplomatic campaign for
the extradition of six of the 12 fugitive convicts who are
believed to be hiding abroad after the Supreme Court last
month upheld the death penalties of the 12 ex-army officers
linked to the killing of Sheikh Mujib on August 15, 1975.
A minister last month said Canada had ordered the
deportation of fugitive ex-lieutenant colonel Noor Chowdhury,
one of the two men who shot the Sheikh Mujib.
