Dhaka: A Bangladeshi court will issue death
warrants against the five former Army officers, convicted in
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination case tomorrow, paving
the way for their execution.
The Dhaka trial court is set issue the warrants against
the five, who are now in the condemned cells, days after the
full judgement of the assassination trial was brought out by
the Supreme Court.
After issuing the death warrants, the trial court will
ask prison officials to take necessary steps to execute the
sentences, the Daily Star said today, quoting court sources.
The Dhaka court received the copy of the full verdict on
Monday, and after a scrutiny of the documents it was decided
to pass the death warrants, it said.
The Supreme Court last month pronounced a "short
judgement," in the over three-decade old assassination trial,
and upheld the death penalties to 12 former military officers
pronounced by the High Court.
The five in custody are Lt Col Syed Farooq Rahman, Lt Col
Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Maj Bazlul Huda, Maj (Lancer) AKM
Mohiuddin Ahmed and Lt Col (Artillery) Mohiuddin Ahmed. While
one of the convicts died in Zimbabwe, others are on the run.
The jail authorities will take steps to execute the five
convicts between 21 and 28 days after receiving the death
warrant, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said.
