Islamabad: The onslaught of dengue is still on in Pakistan's Punjab province with 29 people having succumbed to the disease so far and 5,500 cases confirmed in the province, a media report said.

People are queuing up at hospitals for blood screening, as they are scared of getting infected with dengue even though they may be suffering only with fever, Geo News reported Friday.

Emergency has been declared in hospitals which are finding it hard to cope due to limited resources available with them.

Punjab's Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif told a news conference Sep 14 that his government had ordered urgent import of 150 machines from Germany, latest technology from Britain and medicines from India to tackle the dengue outbreak.

Visiting Sri Lankan experts to Punjab have said that there is no short cut to dealing with the epidemic but a long-term strategy is needed to control the dengue virus.

Dengue symptoms include low blood platelets along with high fever, body rash and vomiting.
