Kathmandu: Eight inmates escaped from a prison in Nepal through a tunnel dug by them.

The inmates ran away from the Rolpa prison at mid-night yesterday, said Rapti Zonal Police Chief Uttam Singh.

Most of them are convicted of serious crimes like rape, dacoity and wildlife poaching, the authorities said.

A squad of 19 policemen were deputed to guard the prison. After the jailbreak, hundreds of security personnel were mobilised and checkpoints were put up across the district.
