Lahore: An explosive device being transported by a suspected terrorist on a motorcycle caught fire in this eastern Pakistani city early Wednesday though there were no casualties in the incident, police said.

The suspected terrorist managed to escape after the explosives caught fire in front of a private university in Faisal Town area of Lahore early this morning.

Superintendent of Police (Operations) Malik Muhammad Awais said some personnel of an elite police unit signalled a motorcyclist to stop but he jumped off the bike in an attempt to escape.

An improvised explosive device with at least three kilogrammes of explosive that the man was carrying caught fire and destroyed the motorcycle.

The suspect managed to escape on foot, Awais said. He said he believed the explosive device was being shifted for some terrorist act.

He contended the police had foiled a terrorist attack.
