Islamabad: Four policemen were gunned down
today in an attack on a police van in Pakistan`s southwest
Balochistan, officials said.

The four policemen, including a head constable, were
killed instantly and two more were injured in the ambush on
the van carrying the salaries of police personnel in Gard Gab
area near Mastung, 150 km west of provincial capital Quetta,
the state-run APP news agency said.

The gunmen escaped after the attack on the van
carrying the salaries of police personnel, officials said.

The police and law enforcement agencies have launched
a search for the gunmen. No group has immediately claimed
responsibility for the attack, the report said.

The insurgency-hit Balochistan province, which
borders Afghanistan and Iran, is rife with Islamist militancy,
sectarian violence between majority Sunnis and minority Shia
Muslims.

Baluch nationalists have demanded political autonomy
and a greater share of profits from the natural resources of
the region.
