Gaurav Shumsher Rana to be Nepal`s next Army Chief

Nepal`s newly-appointed acting Army Chief Lt Gen Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana on Thursday took over charge from his predecessor Gen Chhatra Man Singh Gurung.

Kathmandu: Nepal`s newly-appointed acting Army Chief Lt Gen Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana on Thursday took over charge from his predecessor Gen Chhatra Man Singh Gurung.

The handover ceremony took place at the Nepal Army Headquarters before Gen Gurung went for a customary one-month leave from tomorrow, according to a press release issued by Nepal Army.

58-year-old Rana will officially take over the top military post after Gen Gurung retires on September 9.

Rana was recently appointed to the top post of the Nepal Army through a cabinet decision.

Gurung yesterday introduced Rana as his successor to President Ram Baran Yadav.

Last week, the cabinet designated Rana, the senior most army official as the acting CoAS. Rana has served in the Nepal Army for 38 years.
Rana joined the Army in November 1970. He is the son of Aditya Shumsher Rana, a former Major-General of the Nepal Army, and grandson of Babar Shumsher Rana and great-grandson of former Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher Rana.
