Colombo: Sri Lankan government today said
that it was investigating claims that there was an attempt to
assassinate the former Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka.
"A newspaper report today alleged that the government
is trying to hatch a conspiracy to kill retired Chief of
Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka and we have asked the police to
enquire into the matter," Director General of the Media Centre
for National Security Laxman Hullugalle said to a news agency.
"The newspaper has also claimed that it has evidence
of such a conspiracy and naturally in such allegations the
blame comes on the government," he said, adding the Inspector
General of Police is looking into the issue.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reported that Minister for
Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe said
that the Government was looking into the reports that Fonseka
had not been in the country during the final stages of the war
against LTTE.
"There are reports that he was not in the island from
the 10th to the 17th of May and we are looking into this," the
minister said.
"These are serious claims and they are being
investigated under the orders of the Secretary of Defence
Gotabya Rajapaksa, by the CID and the Police," he said.
