Islamabad: At least two persons were
killed and six others injured when three unidentified gunmen
opened fire at a mosque in Bahawalpur in central Pakistan
on Saturday.
The gunmen, who were travelling on a motorcycle, began
firing when people gathered outside the Al-Qamar mosque after
the `Fajr` or pre-dawn prayers in Satellite Town area of
Bahawalpur.
No group claimed responsibility for the incident.
Rescue teams reached the spot soon after the incident
and took the bodies and the injured to a nearby hospital.
Local residents gathered on the streets and protested
against the attack.
They blocked roads and shouted slogans against the
administration for failing to maintain law and order in the
city.
Senior police officers reached the spot and convinced
the people to disperse after assuring them that the attackers
would be arrested.
Officials said the motive behind the attack would be
established by an investigation.
Later, police beefed up security across Bahawalpur
city.
People from different walks of life condemned the
incident and urged authorities to bring the attackers to
justice.
