Kathmandu, June 25: Nepal`s new government has
declared a Hindu religious preacher, allegedly killed by
Maoist cadres four years back in western Nepal, as a
"religious martyr".

Pandit Narayan Prasad Pokharel, was shot dead by gunmen
allegedly belonging to an organisation affiliated to the
Maoists, when he was delivering a lecture at a religious
programme in Butawal.

The cabinet today decided to honour him by recognising
him as a "religious martyr", officials said.

His son Dinbandhu Pokharel, who now organises regular
discourses on Hindu religion, has welcomed the government`s
move.

"I appreciate the decision and call upon the government
to pay attention to do something concrete in his name," he
said.

He also demanded that the four-year-old murder case be
probed and the culprits brought to book.
