Dhaka: At least nine people have died and
several others were hospitalised after consuming spurious
liquor in northeastern Bangladesh, officials said.

A police official said six of the victims died at a
local facility and three at their home after they consumed
country-made liquor at Balaganj sub-district of Sylhet on
Thursday night.

Police chief of Sylhet Sakhawat Hossain said an
investigation had been launched after the incident.

Every year a number of people die after consuming
contaminated liquor in Bangladesh.

The country had witnessed the death of 50 people in
its worst such tragedy in 1997 in northwestern Gaibandha.
