India 'a loser in Geneva': Sri Lanka daily

India `a loser in Geneva`: Sri Lanka daily Colombo: India may have managed to extricate itself from a domestic political imbroglio at Sri Lanka's expense, but that has "plunged" the country "into an unholy diplomatic and political mire", a leading daily here said on Friday, a day after India voted against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council.

An editorial in The Island said that the diplomatic badger hunt in Geneva is over.

"The cornered badger bravely fought the mastiffs of neo-imperialism, savage in the fray, and went down fighting. It certainly was a defeat as good as victory," it said.

The US, the EU and India voted against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC, securing 24 votes for the US resolution, with 15 against and eight abstentions.

The US and its friends "should be ashamed" that they, in spite of their combined might, could muster only 24 votes, it said.

The editorial said: "The Indian government may have managed to extricate itself from a domestic political imbroglio at Sri Lanka's expense by compromising its much-vaunted foreign policy at the behest of the likes of (Tamil Nadu Chief Minister) Jayalalithaa, but it has, in so doing, plunged India into an unholy diplomatic and political mire."

"Now that it has sided with the US on a country specific resolution against Sri Lanka, other countries will want it to do likewise if and when similar situations arise at the UNHRC in the future," it added.

It went on to say that India has been "a loser in Geneva, though it helped the US win".

"The Tamil Nadu politicians failed to save (LTTE chief) Prabhakaran but since his demise, they have won all political battles against the centre so much so that even the Rajiv Gandhi killers could not be hanged in Tamil Nadu, where they committed that grave crime in April, 1991," it added.

The daily cautioned that the outcome of the Geneva vote and their strong ties with the US will "further embolden Jayalalithaa et al to adopt a more confrontational approach in dealing with the centre".

It further said that the US succeeded in carrying India in Geneva, but "India failed to carry Asia, or at least South Asia with it. In other words, Sri Lanka has won against India in Asia".

The editorial warned that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is "likely to step up its operations in Tamil Nadu, where a situation conducive to its activities exists with prominent politicians backing it to the hilt".

"It is hoped that India will not be hoist with its own petard--once again," it added.

Just wait and watch,we Indians never invaded any country but this time we will conquer Sri Lanka because it belonged to India and with the support of Pakistan and China they cannot last long and soon Sri Lanka will have a Tamil president and primeminister.Soon all Srilankan computer systems will be hacked and we will bring the country to standstill.

Go to Mumbai slums or Madurai city and who is poor, and visit Sri Lanka and see who is poor. Wait and see how Jayalalitha and aging Karunanidi would make a Ealam a reality in India, but never in Sri Lanka.

No, you are completely wrong. Although India has reached to a some level in prospect of development, India has many issues that normally well developing countries shouldn’t have. Extreme population density and continues growth (population per Sq.Km), Lack of crucial natural resources compared to the size of land (Ex. Uranium, Oil, Gold etc.)-Cont.

Extreme population density and continues growth (population per Sq.Km), Lack of crucial natural resources compared to the size of land (Ex. Uranium, Oil, Gold etc.) ,High diversity in economic & living conditions, High diversity among social levels, ethnic issues, Internal Human right violation, poor health system-majority do not have any access to the standard medical care, dramatic increment of HIV positive body ratio,Etc. The development cannot be expressed by growth of GDP or its related indications. It needs range of economic and social measurements unfortunately india still remains at the same point. The development that you talking is restrict only to the capital and areas nearby, but awfully low social and economic conditions present in other areas such as Calcutta.

Apart from that the current development cannot be easily floated because of rising Kashmir conflict, don’t forget the threat of Islamic terrorism, even India faces a risk of nuclear threat by Pakistan. According to my view the biggest issue is population density, In the future there will be many problems ex. Food, Shrinking of Space availability etc. So the future is not impeccable as you dream. Please don’t misunderstand I’m not making a negative point but since I work as an Finance lecturer (in Abu Dhabi University-college of business administration), I aware about these facts.I’m pretty sure sri Lanka will not be a Super Power, but I’m impressed with their current economic development after the three decade civil war and social, living conditions which far beyond than India. Surely they will have a bright future.
