Colombo: India on Sunday agreed to provide 326
million Lankan rupees to restore the Thirukatheeswaram temple,
one of the holiest Hindu shrines in Sri Lanka.
The restoration work of the temple in the northeastern
district of Mannar is to be undertaken with the assistance of
Archaeological Survey of India and the College of Architecture
and Sculpture, Indian High Commission said in a statement
here.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between India
and Sri Lanka today under which New Delhi would provide
assistance worth 326 million Lankan rupees.
The restoration work of the temple which is one of the
holiest Hindu shrines in Sri Lanka is an important symbol of
the island`s Tamil cultural heritage.
Indian officials said the temple`s restoration was one of
the many projects undertaken by the Indian government to
restore normalcy in the former conflict zones.
