Colombo: India and Sri Lanka plan to deepen their cooperation in the agriculture sector, with New Delhi providing machinery and implements worth Rs 250 million to revive agriculture in the country after the end of a three-decade ethnic conflict in 2009.

Tractors and agricultural implements are being provided to farmers' organisations to support the rehabilitation of internally-displaced persons in the country's war-ravaged northern province, Indian High Commission here today said.

The Indian government will provide a total of 500 tractors to farmers along with agricultural implements. It will also supply seeds for the Maha and Yala harvesting seasons in 2010-11.

The supply of tractors under the programme has already started with the ceremonial handing-over of 52 tractors with a complete set of farm implements in November.

Thousands of Sri Lankan Tamils were displaced due to the civil war in the country. The LTTE, which fought a three- decade war for a separate state alleging discrimination against the minority Tamils by the Sinhalas, was defeated by government troops in May 2009.
