Kabul: President Hamid Karzai is calling on Afghanistan`s police and army to prepare themselves to take charge of protecting and defending the nation after the eventual exit of international forces.
Karzai spoke on Saturday at the presidential palace where he promoted 28 members of the Afghan security forces.
He says NATO forces will leave Afghanistan once they no longer feel the need to stay for their own national security interests. He says when that happens, Afghans must be ready to protect their borders and people and ensure good governance.
Karzai`s upbeat and nationalistic speech was a move to bolster Afghanistan`s image as a sovereign nation that must plan for its future despite its heavy dependence on international troops and aid.
