Kathmandu affected by shut down of Govt offices

A major ethnic group has called for shut down of Kathmandu`s 35 ward offices.

Kathmandu: Around a million people were affected as a major ethnic group here called for the shut down of the city`s 35 ward offices.

The Newa Swayatta Rajya Manka Sangharsha Samiti (NSRMSS) has enforced an indefinite shut down of Government offices, demanding a 51 percent quota for people from the Newar ethnic community in offices that come under the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).

Work at all 35 wards offices of the KMC has been halted since yesterday, informed Naresh Bir Shakya, media coordinator of the agitating body. In addition, the group also staged rallies and sit-in today to press their demands.
The agitation began when KMC published the result of the examinations held in 2007 to fill vacant positions in offices responsible for issuing documents related to birth, death, marriage, citizenship, passport, land and house transactions, but none from the Newar community were selected.
