Kabul: Afghan security forces captured three Taliban militants, including a key commander, during an operation Sunday in Herat province, an official said.

"Taliban commander Mullah Zahir, along with two of his bodyguards, was captured during an operation launched in Shindand district this morning," spokesman for the provincial administration Mohiuding Nuri told a news agency.

Herat province is 640 km west of Afghan capital Kabul.

Describing Mullah Zahir as a key commander in the western region, Nuri said that with his arrest, the security situation would be further strengthened in the region.

The Taliban were yet to make any comment.
