Lanka to develop Hambantota port as trans-shipment hub

The Hambantota port named after President Mahinda Rajapaksa would be established as a preferred transshipment hub for vehicles, Sri Lanka Ports Authority has said.

Colombo: Sri Lanka will develop Hambantota port in southern part of the country as a trans-shipment hub for vehicles to ease congestion at the Colombo port.

The vast areas available for parking at Hambantota will be an added boost for the trans-shipment trade, it said.
The China has funded construction of the port. First phase cost USD 360 million while the second phase expected to be completed by 2014 will cost further USD 750 million.

The port was formally opened in November 2010.
