Colombo: Betting on the candidature of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a maverick Sri Lankan minister has offered 16.02 million rupees to anyone who defeats the incumbent in the forthcoming January 26 polls.

At a meeting here yesterday, Sri Lankan Labour Minister Mervyn Silva dared anyone to defeat Rajapaksa and offered to take a 40 million Sri Lankan rupees (16.02 million INR) worth of bet with him on the outcome of the polls.

Silva said, "I will gamble with my brand new Benz car, Montero jeep and others from my fleet of vehicles and my houses including the one in Tissamaharama."

He told a gathering that the Common Opposition Candidate Sarath Fonseka's fortunes were dwindling after the recent solar eclipse and Rajapaksa's chances were becoming stronger, the Island Newspaper reported.

The Minister is known for picking up arguments with the media on reporting issues.

After the eclipse Mervyn is a the peak of his madness. He is about to crash land and fall flat on his face. He may have to go back to the CWE and become the labourer and start carrying good for President Fonseka.

The present Sri Lankan government is favouring a few rich commercial fishemen at the risk of destroy Sri Lankan fisheries and forever taking away the livelyhood of small scale fisherfolk especially in North and East. Sri Lanka sets aside over 25% of land to wild life reservers and less than 1% of maritime area as marine reserves we need to identify sentisive marne areas and set them aside like the Maldives to ensure the futire of Sri Lankan fisheries.

Mervin says what he believes in. He is very sharp in his challenge as he wants Lankans to know that Fonseka is trying to do something impossible. Let us not redicule him.
