Peshawar: Suspected militants killed a
member of the minority Ahmedi sect and injured his son in an
attack in northwest Pakistan`s Mardan district today, police
said.
The attackers, who were on a bike, shot dead Mehmud
and injured his son Arif in Muslimabad town of Mardan
district.
Arif had recently received a cash award of Rs 50,000
from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister for displaying
valour during a botched attempt by a suicide bomber to storm
an Ahmedi mosque in Muslimabad in September.
One person was killed and two others were injured in
that attack.
Muslimabad has a sizeable population of Ahmedis, who
have been the target of a string of attacks by pro-Taliban
militants this year.
In May, 95 people were killed when suicide attackers
stormed two Ahmedi mosques in Lahore.
Ahmedis consider themselves Muslim but they were
declared non-Muslims through a constitutional amendment in
1974.
A decade later, they were legally barred from
proselytising or identifying themselves as Muslims in
Pakistan.
Some 1.5 million Ahmedis live across the country.
