Mob destroys private radio, TV station in Sri Lanka

A gang of about 15 men doused the building in petrol and set studios on fire.

Colombo: About a dozen unidentified men on Friday attacked a private television station here and set it on fire after destroying equipment inside the studios.

The men stormed the Siyapha television studious and exploded a petrol bomb after destroying equipment inside the news room studios, Editor of the Siyapha Radio and TV channel Joe Bense said.

"Two of my reporters Leninraj and Rajnikanthan suffered injuries during the attack that was carried out by unidentified persons at around 0130 am in the morning," Bense said.

While one of them suffered injuries in the head, the other got a fracture in his hand, he said.

Meanwhile, the police have appointed a three-member committee to carry out full scale investigation into the attack.

Bense said the situation was under control and that the attackers had targeted the news section of the radio and TV office.

Siyapha also runs the popular Tamil Veetri FM Radio.
