Rawalpindi: Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has urged the accountability courts to withdraw corruption references against President Asif Ali Zardari, saying he enjoys special immunity under the Constitution.

An application filed by the NAB stated that the bureau wants to withdraw an earlier application because the application for reviving the cases was “misconceived and not maintainable.”

Citing Article 248 of the Constitution, the NAB application said that the President was exempted from appearing before courts and no criminal proceedings could be initiated against him, The Dawn reports.

It may be noted that Zardari has been made the main accused in seven references, including, the BMW car, Polo ground, and ARY Gold cases.

The court has already initiated criminal proceedings against all other co-accused and has issued notice against them.
