NATO drone strike kills 50 Taliban in Afghanistan

Hattiqullah, the Taliban`s "shadowy police chief" for the district, and another leader Turabi were among those killed.

Kabul: At least 50 suspected Taliban militants were killed on Saturday when a pilotless NATO plane bombed Afghanistan`s eastern province of Kunar, Xinhua reported.

The drone targeted four vehicles in Shinallai area of Chapa Dara district around 1 pm, killing the militants, that included 13 local commanders, police said.

Hattiqullah, the Taliban`s "shadowy police chief" for the district, and another leader Turabi were among those killed.

The Taliban, which launched a spring offensive against Afghan and NATO forces in May, did not comment.

In another attack, the head of a district prison in the southern province of Helmand was also killed on Saturday.

Ismail Khan, the head of the Gereshk district prison, died when a sticky bomb attached to his vehicle went off near the prison compound around 1 pm, police said.
