Kabul: A NATO service member died in a roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan early Tuesday, the military coalition said.

No further details were released.

More than 670 US and other international troops have died in Afghanistan so far this year.

NATO forces have poured troops into the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand and have been making progress in their battle against the Taliban. But fighting has continued there and in the eastern provinces where the Haqqani network, a Pakistan-based Taliban faction closely tied to Al-Qaeda, holds sway.

A joint NATO-Afghan operation on December 13 captured a leader of the Haqqani network in the eastern Khost province, NATO said today, adding that the man helped plant roadside bombs and planned other attacks on Afghan and coalition forces.
