Kathmandu: At least 235 government officials, who were protesting outside the Finance Ministry complex here for the past three days demanding equal pay-hike, were on Tuesday detained by the police.

The protesters were arrested as they violated the government's rule by demonstrating in restricted area, police said.

The agitating employees were staging a sit-in in Singhadurbar secretariat complex protesting against the "discriminatory hike" in the civil servants' salaries during the recent budget announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikary.

Various government employees' organisations, including Nepal National Civil Servants Organisation, Civil Servants' National Committee and National Independent Employee Reunion Centre have been demanding the government review its decision to hike salaries.

They have alleged that the government has neglected the interest of the lower level government staff while increasing the pay and perks in the current year's budget.
