Kathmandu: Nepali Congress, the largest democratic party of the country, will now elect 75 per cent of the members of its main decision making body, curtailing the power of the party president, who hitherto nominated 50 per cent of the members.

The decision, taken today at the National Conference or "Mahasamiti", will democratise the selection process at the top positions of Central Working Committee which was till now prerogative of the party president.

Previously, half of the members of the committee, including the office bearers, were nominated by the party president. The new provision in the statute, proposed by the majority of members at conference, will allow the party president to recommend three office bearers - vice-president, general secretary and the joint general secretary.

Party president Girija Prasad Koirala, who wanted to keep the party president's post all powerful, had expressed his unwillingness to the move.

The general convention or "Mahadhibeshan" of the party will now elect 75 per cent of the 85 member CWC including the party president, the general secretary and the treasurer.
