New Zealand citizen arrested in Pakistan

A police official said that Powell George was travelling in his car when it hit a motorcycle.

Lahore: A New Zealand citizen was arrested in this Pakistani city after his car hit and injured two youths, police said on Monday.

A police official said that Powell George was travelling with his wife in his car late last night when it hit a motorcycle in Gulberg area, where there was a traffic snarl caused by people celebrating the Independence Day on the roads.

The two youths riding the motorcycle suffered injuries and were admitted to Services Hospital, where doctors said they were out of danger.

George, who has been in Pakistan since 2006 on a work visa, tried to escape but police and local residents surrounded his vehicle.

George was later sent to jail and a case was registered against him.

"The foreigner tried to flee after hitting the youngsters, who were also apparently speeding at the time of the incident," ASP Fazal-e-Hamid said.

George told reporters that he had not hit the motorcycle and that the youth driving it had lost his balance as he was speeding.

"There are no marks on my vehicle, which is the proof of my innocence," he said.
