No cleric was willing to lead Taseer’s funeral Zeenews Bureau

Islamabad: In a pointer to the volatility and the reach of fundamentalists in Pakistani society, leading Imams from Lahore refused to lead the funeral prayers for Punjab Governor Salman Taseer who was assassinated for his opposition to the country’s blasphemy law.

The cold-blooded murder of a high-profile leader seems to have further intimidated those seeking a more liberal and secular Pakistan. What adds to the sense of shock is the open assertion by religious scholars that anyone who expressed grief over the assassination of Taseer could suffer the same fate.

The Jamaat-e-Ahl-e-Sunnat Pakistan group of scholars said in a statement: "More than 500 scholars of the Jamaat-e-Ahl-e-Sunnat have advised Muslims not to offer the funeral prayers of Governor Punjab Salman Taseer nor try to lead the prayers."

"Also, there should be no expression of grief or sympathy on the death of the governor, as those who support blasphemy of the Prophet are themselves indulging in blasphemy,” the statement said.

Following the open threat, most Imams preferred to stay away from the funeral prayers for Taseer. Even, the chief cleric of Lahore’s iconic Badshahi Mosque, who had earlier agreed to offer prayers, shied away at the last moment, saying he was going out of town.

At last, Allama Afzal Chishti, general secretary Ulema wing of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Punjab chapter, offered the funeral prayer for Taseer.

Despite the threat, the funeral was attended by thousands of people. Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and other top government officials were also present to witness the solemn moment.

Taseer, a liberal politician close to President Asif Ali Zardari, had championed the cause of a Christian woman sentenced to death under the blasphemy laws which critics say are used to target religious minorities, often to settle personal scores. He was known as an outspoken critic of the blasphemy law.

His killing in broad daylight at a shopping centre in Islamabad on Tuesday showed how difficult, and how dangerous, it would be to roll back a tide of religious conservatism which is growing in strength in the Muslim country of 170 million.

Taseer was killed by one of his guards, who said he was incensed by the politician's opposition to the blasphemy laws, in a parking lot at a block of shops popular with foreigners.

Many religious leaders praised the "courage" and religious zeal of the killer, saying his action had made Muslims around the world proud. Pakistani officials said they were investigating whether the killing was part of a wider conspiracy.

I aggree with most of you guys here, except the first comment from an indian guy which was nothing but expression of hatred, obviously.

@ SARA, FARAZ, OMER & MARK

I think we, as muslims, should look at this incident with complete neutrality. As we dont know what exactly Taseer was trying to do and what that christian lady said. The reason i am saying this is that there are authentic Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in which he asked to kill people who insulted him, or caused him pain (due to ill comments).

So I dont know really what that woman said, but the blashphemy law, which is termed as controversial, was very well thought of if any of you guys know how it was made. It took the scholars 3 years to finalize it. They discussed it, debated it for three long years ``after`` its finalization to reach concensus of different conflicts among various school of thoughts that ultimately lead to its approval. Only after that it was approved in a refined form. Taseer didnt even know what that law was, he was just gaining political advantage in international community to term it as ``black law``. which was a mistake as I see it.

Hope I havent confused people much :-)

Killing of Mr.Taseer was totally UnIslamic.Mr. Taseer was supporting a poor Christian Lady, who was called names and in retaliation, she said bad things to Our beloved Prophet PBUH..What good were the Muslim women of that village did?

Mr.Taseer was trying to save an poor and he was very right in doing so.Inspite of his colorful life,he died for a good cause.May Allah forgive him and forgive us all and save ourselves from the sher of Muslim clerics who are doing the same as Rabbis and Priests did at the time of Muhammad PBUH.

Peace!!

A Muslim.

Dear All,
I can`t understand one thing. When such thing happens in another society the same things will happen. What if a Muslim slaughters a cow in the Indian soceity? What will happen? If Hindus are not extremist then why there is a ban on beef in India? Because it is sacred for them and being a Muslim I respect your beliefs. But why when Muslims sow utmost respect to their beliefs, why others dont show respect? Infact they are called barbaric extremist etc. If I abuse any god of hindu beliefs, will hindus not kill me, ofcourse they will as such things have already happened in india. We Mulsim love Prophet Mohammad PBUH more than anything else. Even our families. So please we only request all to respect him. We respect your beliefs and and you respect ours. World will be in peace. And extremists are in every religion every country. Look at Jews, Christians, Hindus etc. Only media propogates Islamic extremism. Why not others are put on front pages in newspapers. Every Muslim is not an extrismist and at the same time every hindu, jew or christian is not an extremist. So respect others and you will get respect.
