Kathmandu: The association of 2.5 million strong non-resident Nepalese (NRN) have demanded dual citizenship for smooth travelling and business in the country.

The demand was made during three day global conference inaugurated by Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav.

"The government should provide dual citizenship for the NRN communities around the world. We want Nepalese citizenship with limited rights such as rights to do business, to travel without visa and to own properties in Nepal," president of Non-Resident Nepalese Association Upendra Mahato said.

"But we don’t want voting rights and right to do government jobs from the citizenship," he clarified.

In his inaugural address, President Yadav stressed the importance of peace in the country that faced civil war for decades. "There is no place of weapons in democracy. I have saved many lives, but never taken any," said the President who comes from a medical background.

He called on the Non-Resident Nepalese communities to exert pressure on the political parties so that a democratic constitution could be written on time and the peace process could be taken to the logical end soon. He urged them to help in writing a democratic constitution as thousands of countrymen have sacrificed their lives for the cause.
