Dhaka: One person was killed and 33 were injured as police opened fire on agitating locals who were demanding a highway speed breaker in northern Bangladesh.

The police officer in charge of the area was suspended after Thursday`s incident on Dhaka-Mawa highway at Kuchiamora in Munshiganj district.

The locals demanded a speed breaker following the death of Mehedi Hasan, a class seven student, in a road accident on Wednesday.

Moslem, 32, died in Thursday`s clash.

While the agitators accused the police of indiscriminate use of force, the police said many of the agitators were carrying "a variety of weapons", The Daily Star reported.
