Colombo: Ahead of the April 8 Parliamentary
polls in Sri Lanka, detained former army chief Sarath
Fonseka-led opposition alliance DNA has launched an online
signature campaign seeking his release.
Former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva launched the campaign
signing a petition that called for Fonseka's release.
Cricketer-turned politician Arjuna Ranatunga also
participated in the launch that was chaired by Fonseka's wife
Anoma on Monday.
Marxist JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe and several
former MPs of the party too signed the petition seeking the
release of the General, who has been arrested on conspiracy
charges.
The DNA campaign claims that Fonseka is being detained
"undemocratically" at the Sri Lankan Navy headquarters in
Colombo, with meagre facilities.
Fonseka's JVP-dominated Democratic National Alliance
(DNA) will challenge former Premier and main opposition UNP
chief Ranil Wickremasinghe-led United National Front (UNF) and
President Mahinda Rajapaksa's ruling United People's Freedom
Alliance (UPFA) in the April 8 Parliamentary elections.
The DNA will fight under the symbol of 'Trophy' and
Fonseka has filed his nomination papers from the Colombo
District constituency.
