Peshawar: Suspected Taliban fighters today attacked an army checkpost in Pakistan`s troubled northwest near the Afghan border, leading to an intense gunfight in which nine militants were killed, military sources said.

"In North Waziristan, terrorists attacked a security forces checkpost. In retaliatory fire by security forces, nine terrorists were killed," a Pakistani military source said.

He added that three soldiers were injured in an IED blast in South Waziristan agency.

North Waziristan, a site of frequent US drone strikes, is one of seven semi-autonomous tribal regions in Pakistan.
The region is believed to be a stronghold of Taliban and al Qaeda.
