Lahore, Nov 09: Pakistan’s defence forces should be subordinate to the political leadership, according to the country’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asfaq Parvez Kayani.

National Security Adviser Mahmud Ali Durrani revealed General Kayani’s views on the relationship between the defence forces and the civilian establishment in an interview to the Newsweek.

“He (General Kayani) is making every effort [to work under the political leadership] because he believes in democracy. He believes . . . that the military should be a subordinate department.”

Durrani, however, said that the political leadership should only give “broad guidance, directives and objectives”, adding that when it “tries to run battles and campaigns”, it is “a dangerous game”.

“So far things are going all right,” the Daily Times quoted him as adding.
