Pakistani police claimed to have foiled an attempt to target important government buildings and mosques in the capital on the eve of the country`s Independence Day.

Islamabad: Pakistani police on Thursday claimed to
have foiled an attempt to target important government
buildings and mosques in the capital on the eve of the
country`s Independence Day by arresting two alleged
terrorists.

The two men, identified as 31-year-old Muhammad Nadeem
alias Bahadur and 28-year-old Hafiz Abdul Maroof alias
Sanaullah, were arrested by a police team that was conducting
routine checks in the Thanda Pani area, a police spokesman
said.

Two grenades were found in the possession of the men, who
had plans to target key buildings and mosques in Islamabad,
the spokesman said.

Both men are residents of Astore district in
Gilgit-Baltistan.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements for
Pakistan`s Independence Day on August 14 and senior officials
have directed all police stations to enhance checking in their
areas.

Officials said police had arrested around 135 terrorists
in Islamabad since March 2009, including a dozen suspected
suicide bombers.
