Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf
Raza Gilani on Sunday supported India's proposal for an extension
in the term of Kamlesh Sharma as Secretary General of the
Commonwealth.
In a message from Perth where he is attending the
Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Gilani backed
India's move for Sharma to be given another four-year term.
Gilani said that "Pakistan fully supports the extension
in the term of Mr Sharma", an official statement said.
Veteran Indian diplomat Sharma was today re-appointed
Secretary General of the 54-nation grouping for a term
beginning April 2012.
India proposed 70-year-old Sharma's name for a second
term at the concluding session of the CHOGM and Pakistan
seconded it.
The move follows India's backing of Pakistan in recent
elections for a non-permanent slot in the UN Security Council.
