Lahore: Following in the footsteps of extremist groups like the Jamaat-ud-Dawah, Pakistani lawyers have offered funeral prayers for al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden after he was killed in a US raid last week.

The 'ghayabana namaz-e-janaza' or funeral prayers in absentia were organised by Al Ummah Lawyers Forum, Islamic Lawyers Forum and Khatam-e-Nabuwat Lawyers Forum in Lahore yesterday.

Advocate Muhammad Yahya Johar led the funeral prayer that was joined by dozens of lawyers.

Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari, Punjab Bar Council member Chaudhry Zulfiqar and JuD chief Hafiz Saeed's counsel A K Dogar were among those who participated in the prayers.

Dogar declared bin Laden a 'shaheed-e-ummat' (martyr of the Muslim brotherhood) and said the al Qaeda leader "lost his life during jihad".

Police present in the court premises did not stop the lawyers from going ahead with the event.
