Lahore: The mystery surrounding the
murder of the aged parents of a judge of Pakistan’s Supreme
Court was resolved on Tuesday after his brother confessed to the
crime, a government spokesman said.
The spokesman of the Punjab government said Navid
Iqbal, the younger brother of Justice Javed Iqbal, had
confessed to the crime while in police custody.
The parents of the outspoken judge - Abdul Hameed, an
82-year-old former police official, and Zarina, 70 were
found murdered at their home near Calvary Ground within
Lahore’s cantonment on January 11.
There had been speculation that the killings could be
linked to several high-profile cases being heard by Justice
Iqbal.
A senior police officer, who did not want to be named, said that Navid Iqbal had been missing since the murder of
the couple.
"Navid Iqbal had not been in contact with the family
after the murder. He did not even attend the funeral prayers,"
the official said.
The official further said that Navid Iqbal was a
sub-inspector in Punjab Police and was dismissed from service
sometime ago due to a disciplinary matter.
"The accused had no regular source of income and he
used to demand money from his parents," he said.
Navid Iqbal also used to demand money from his
brother, the official alleged.
He will be presented in a court tomorrow so that
police can seek his physical remand.
