Islamabad: Afghanistan has said that Pakistan has not yet played "a very effective role" in the war against terror.

Waheed Omer, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, said: "The stance of the Afghan government has always been this: Pakistan can play a very effective role in bringing peace to Afghanistan, the region and Pakistan itself."

"But unfortunately it has not yet played that very effective role," the News International quoted Omer as saying.

The official was reacting to US President Barack Obama`s comments in India on Pakistan`s efforts against battling terrorism.

Obama told the joint sitting of the Indian parliament Monday: "...we will continue to insist to Pakistan`s leaders that terrorist safe havens within their borders are unacceptable."

"We must also recognise that all of us have an interest in both an Afghanistan and a Pakistan that is stable, prosperous and democratic - and none more so than India," the US president asserted.
Omer added: "There are some certain circles unfortunately that are not only not helping bring peace to the region but are instigating insecurity and supporting illegitimate terrorist activities."

Obama arrived in India Saturday and left for Indonesia Tuesday. He will also be visiting South Korea and Japan as part of his Asia tour.
