Pak PM cancels US visit due to floods

Gilani will visit flood-hit areas from Saturday and supervise relief efforts being undertaken by authorities.

Islamabad: Pak Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
on Friday called off his planned visit to the US to attend the UN
General Assembly because of the heavy rains and floods in
southern Pakistan, an official spokesman said today.

Gilani had "called off his visit to New York to address
the United Nations General Assembly due to epidemic situation
because of heavy rains and floods in Sindh province," said a
statement issued by the Prime Minister’s House.

The premier spoke on phone with Foreign Minister Hina
Rabbani Khar, currently in Dubai, and informed her about his
decision.

Gilani directed Khar to represent Pakistan at the UN
General Assembly session.

The floods in Sindh have killed over 200 people and
affected more than five million.

Pakistan has made several appeals to the world community
to provide aid for the flood victims.

Gilani will visit flood-hit areas from tomorrow and
supervise relief efforts being undertaken by federal
authorities and the Sindh government, the statement said.
