Peshawar: Pakistani police said
they had averted a major terrorist attack by defusing a 12
kilogramme bomb in the country`s northwest.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a search
operation at the town hall in Mardan town of
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and found the bomb concealed in a
water cooler.

The bomb disposal squad was called in to defuse the
device, district police chief Wakif Khan said.

Officials said the bomb could have caused many
casualties and widespread destruction if it had exploded.

In a separate development, police arrested 56
suspects, including 19 proclaimed offenders, during a search
operation in the northwest and seized a cache of arms and
ammunition.

The seized weapons included four Kalashnikovs and four
rifles.

Police also seized two kilogrammes of hashish during
the search.

Police across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have been put on high
alert for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha festival as intelligence
reports have warned that militants could carry out suicide
attacks and bombings, officials said.
