Islamabad: Pakistan’s name has been removed from the list of heroin-making countries, Federal Secretary Anti-Narcotics Sohail Ahmed has said.
It is after continuous efforts for some years that Pakistan has been declared such a country where heroin is not produced as per the international level, Ahmed told The News.
Eighty percent heroin of the world is being produced in Afghanistan despite the United States and its allies’ control on that country, Ahmed added.
According to United Nations (UN) sources, 40 percent narcotics are being smuggled from Afghanistan via Pakistan, and 60 percent via Iran.
Burma is also producing 16 percent heroin. Meanwhile, a sharp increase in the use of heroin among people has been noticed in Pakistan.
