Peshawar: Pakistani troops gunned down 19 militants, including foreign fighters, and took control of an important rebel stronghold in the troubled Khyber Agency on Friday.

Security personnel took control of the militant base of Chhapri Feroze Khel after overcoming stiff resistance from the rebels, the Frontier Corps said.

Three foreign fighters were among the 19 militants killed in fighting.

Officials claimed many rebels were injured. Troops also took control of a key road connecting Khyber Agency and Orakzai tribal region, officials said.

A total of 49 militants have been killed and 48 arrested in three days of fighting in Khyber Agency, located a short distance from the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Earlier in the day, security forces pounded militant strongholds in Tirah area of Khyber Agency and destroyed several camps.

The militants were on the run and security forces had cordoned off the area and sealed key roads, officials said. The militants have targeted army and Frontier Corps camps in the region.
