Pakistan hit by 5.7 magnitude earthquake

Islamabad: The Pakistani capital and northern regions of the country were rocked by an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale this afternoon though there were no reports of casualties, officials said.

The tremor, described by officials as moderate, was felt at 2.52 pm in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and other cities and towns of Punjab province, and northern areas of the country.

The quake also jolted Peshawar, Swat, Nowshera, and Khyber and Mohmand tribal regions.

The Meteorological Department said the quake measured 5.7 on the Richter Scale.

Chief Meteorologist Mohammad Riaz said the epicentre of the quake was located 188 km north of Islamabad in the Hindu Kush mountain range of Afghanistan.

Though the temblor lasted only a few seconds, people rushed out of their homes and workplaces in panic.

There were no reports of casualties or damage to property from any part of Pakistan.
