Karachi: Police here on Thursday claimed to have arrested the prime suspect involved in the bombing of a Shia neighbourhood in which nearly 50 people were killed and scores injured, early this month.

"The prime suspect and two other of his accomplices in the Abbas town bomb blast were arrested today and they are also associated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)," DIG Javed Odho said.

Police in Karachi today also claimed to have arrested the local chief of the dreaded Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Police said they had arrested Alam Sher Mehsud who is the chief of the Karachi chapter of the TTP, after a raid conducted in Surjani Town on the outskirts of Pakistan`s biggest city.

"Another accomplice of Mehsud was also arrested during the raid," a senior police official said refusing to be named.

He said the raid was carried out on basis of information they got from two militants of the TTP who were arrested in the city yesterday.

"He (Alam Sher Mehsud) was the mastermind behind several bomb blasts in the city," the official said but declined to give details of the blasts.

The police also said they shot dead Qari Bilal who was the TTP chief for the Mangopir area.

Station House officer of Mangopir police station, Ashfaq Baloch, said unknown assailants had also fired on the station soon after the death of Qari Bilal but fled after the policemen fired back.

DIG Odho said that the raid was conducted in Mangopir after a tip-off following the killing of well-known social activist Perveen Rehman in Orangi, last night.
