Islamabad: Former top leader of Afghan Taliban, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, was released on Saturday by Pakistani authorities to advance peace efforts with Afghanistan.
While Baradar was released today, it is not clear as to where he will be sent after his release. He will be provided with security cover and there will be no restrictions in whoever he wants to meet.
However, no official confirmation regarding Baradar’s release was made by the Pakistani government. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry denied releasing the Taliban leader, as per news reports.
One of the top Taliban leaders to be released, Baradar is one of the founding member of the Taliban movement in 1994. He was captured 2010 by Pakistani security agencies in Karachi.
The Foreign Ministry had issued a statement on Friday stating that Baradar would be released today.
The demand for his release was made by Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai during his visit to Islamabad.
