Pakistan`s foreign policy is successful: Gilani

Pakistan Prime Minister said the country had got many achievements on the foreign front.

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the country`s foreign policy was successful and cited India`s vote to Pakistan in the UN Security Council as an example.

Pakistan narrowly won a hotly-contested seat to the UN Security Council, joining India for a two-year term on the 15-member decision-making organ of the world body.

India is already serving as a non-permanent member for the 2011-2012 term.

Gilani said in Lahore on Sunday: "Afghan President Hamid Karzai`s unconditional support to Pakistan against foreign aggression, India`s vote to Pakistan in the UN Security Council and country`s renewed role in the European Union (EU) reflect the effectiveness of our foreign policy."

He said the country had got many achievements on the foreign front, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.

Rejecting the idea of any role for the Army in politics, Gilani said: "Don`t drag the Army into politics. The Army is a disciplined institution and it has nothing to do with politics of the country."

On US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton`s recent visit, the Prime Minister said there had been marked improvement following the dialogue with the US.

He added that the country believed in Pakistan-US relations based on mutual respect and mutual interest.

Hillary on Friday told Pakistan: "You can`t keep snakes in your backyard and expect it to only bite neighbours."

She said that the US has reasserted its commitment to eliminating safe havens of terror.

The ties between the US and Pakistan became strained after the May 02 killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The ties dipped further after the US accused Pakistan`s powerful spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), of supporting the Haqqani network, which Washington blames for attacks on its interests in Afghanistan.
