Lahore: Authorities have beefed up security in and around churches across Pakistan`s Punjab province ahead of Christmas.

Provincial police chief Tariq Saleem Dogar said he had directed senior police officials to remain alert and enhance security to maintain law and order during the year-end.

He also directed them to take effective precautionary measures, especially in crowded public places, to avert any incident of terrorism.

Policemen in plainclothes will be deployed where necessary.

Patrolling around railway stations, bus terminals, markets, cinema halls, hotels, mosques and churches has been intensified, he said.

Dogar asked people immediately alert police if they find any unclaimed object or spot a suspicious person.
